I never look at the manual unless a light comes on and I don’t know what it means, which is usually a bad sign. When something goes wrong with your car, you have to pay a lot of money to fix it.

Make a deal with a friend to have them check the car maintenance for you

If you know someone you can trust who knows a lot about cars, they could be a great source of information for you. Offer to buy them dinner if they will look over your car for you. It would help you a lot to have someone you trust tell you when you should look at something.

Plus, they might be willing to show you how to do some of the maintenance care yourself.

Let your husband handle it

This is how things work in our house (for the most part). I’m very lucky that my husband knows more than just the basics about cars and can take care of them. If your husband doesn’t already know how to do these things, ask him if he would be willing to learn so you don’t have to, unless you really want to do these things.

If neither you nor your husband are interested in learning how to take care of your cars, the next best thing would be to find a trustworthy mechanic to do regular checks for you. Look around for a good mechanic. Read reviews online and ask people you know in the area who they use.

This option is a little more expensive than doing it yourself, but the regular maintenance will still save you money in the long run.

Pay a mechanic to do what you don’t want to learn how to do (do some of the stuff)

This is the option that I tend to choose when I’m not sure what to do. Your schedule is full! You might only have time each month to do a few quick checks at home. That’s just fine!

My husband used to change our oil, but because of how we live now, we decided it was worth the cost and time to pay someone else to do it.

You might be willing to do some things at home but want to pay someone else to do the rest. No matter what your reason is (even if it’s just that you don’t want to), do what’s best for you and your family. We pay someone else to rotate the tires, change the oil, and change the filter because it’s easier.
